Arthel Lane "Doc" Watson (1923–2012) was an American guitarist, songwriter, and singer of bluegrass, folk, country, blues, and gospel music. He performed with his son, guitarist Merle Watson, for over 15 years until Merle's death in 1985 in an accident on the family farm. He is best known for his flatpick in guitar playing. His guitar playing skills, combined with his authenticity as a mountain musician, made him a highly influential figure during the folk music revival. "The Wayfaring Stranger" is a well-known American folk and gospel song likely originating in the early 19th century about a plaintive soul on the journey through life.
